Train Journey Problem
Emma takes a train from Town A to Town B, which is 90 miles apart. The train travels at an average speed of 30 miles per hour for the first half of the journey. For the second half, it increases its speed to 60 miles per hour.
What is the total time taken for Emma’s journey?
Total distance = 90 miles
ReplyDeleteFirst half of the journey = 90 ÷ 2 = 45 miles
Second half of the journey = 45 miles
Time for the first half:
Speed = 30 mph
Time = Distance ÷ Speed = 45 ÷ 30 = 1.5 hours
Time for the second half:
Speed = 60 mph
Time = Distance ÷ Speed = 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours
Total time for the journey:
1.5 + 0.75 = 2.25 hours or 2 hours 15 minutes
