If 2x - 5y = 12 and x + y = 3, find the values of x and y

    b. Using the system of equations:
    2x - 5y = 12 ... (1)
    x + y = 3 ... (2)
    From (2), x = 3 - y. Plugging this into (1):
    2(3 - y) - 5y = 12
    Combining like terms: 6 - 7y = 12
    -7y = 6
    y = -6/7 or y = -0.857
    x = 3 + 0.857 = 3.857
