Granddad's weekly pension
Granddad spends one quarter of his weekly pension on a Friday night out, and one third of what remains on a Saturday night. What fraction of his weekend pension is left for him to spend during the rest of the week?

We can create some equations:

y = remaining pension
x - (1/4x + 1/3(1 - 1/4)x) = y
x - (1/4x + 1/3x - 1/12x) = y
x - 1/2x = y
y = 1/2x
