Bananas and pears

A shop sells bananas and pears. Max buys 1 banana and 2 pears. He paid 94p. Emily buys 1 banana and 1 pear. She paid 62p. How much does 1 banana cost?

  1. We can make 2 equations and solve it:

    b + 2p = 94
    b + p = 62

    With this we can tell that one pear is 32 pence.
    Then we use the second equation to get:
    b + 32 = 62
    b = 30

    Now we have our answer.
    One banana costs 30pence
